Purpose
The Specialist, Women’s Economic Power (WEP) leads WfWI’s global programming supporting all aspects of women’s economic power, helping women survivors of war to learn financial and vocational skills, earn and save money, and build sustainable livelihoods. The Technical Advisor, WEP has overall responsibility for developing and overseeing WfWI’s WEP strategy, inspiring innovation, ensuring quality, seeking funding, overseeing grants, encouraging learning and knowledge management on all areas related to WEP.

This is a fully remote position to be closer to our programs. We have a strong preference for candidates from and based in our country offices, including Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, Nigeria, Rwanda, Palestine and the DRC.

Expected travel is 20%-25%.





Key Responsibilities


The Specialist, WEP will serve as the technical leader for WfWI’s extensive women’s economic power programming. They will provide technical guidance and quality oversight to WfWI’s entire WEP portfolio which includes but is not limited to: Curriculum development and reviews, cash transfers, financial inclusion interventions (savings groups, linkages to FFIs and DFS), numeracy and financial literacy skill building, hands-on business, vocational training and mentoring, micro-entrepreneurship and cooperatives/associations support, market and value chain analysis and linkages. All of WfWI’s programming is gender transformative, integrates climate resilience, and is adapted to fragile and conflict-affected contexts, including working with displaced populations. They are the primary point of contact for WfWI’s Country Offices to support the teams with fundraising, nurturing partnerships and program implementation. They work hand-in-hand with other technical advisors (i.e. social empowerment) and with teams who lead business development, grants management, advocacy and policy, and marketing and communications.

Fundraising Efforts
  • Together with the Business Development team (BD), track funding trends in the WEP sector and highlight potential opportunities for funding, positioning or partnerships with peer and implementing organizations.
  • Collaborate with business development teams on researching and responding to funding opportunities, both with existing and new donors and investors.
  • Support all fundraising efforts for resource mobilization related to WEP including leading WEP program design and drafting sections for funding proposals and developing new project concept notes.
  • Develop highly impactful messages about our WEP program to share with donors and potential partners.

Relationship Building and External Representation
  • Identify, promote, nurture and maintain partnerships and linkages with organizations and networks working on WEP at regional and global levels including regional and global I/NGOs, institutions, UN bodies, etc.
  • Support country teams to develop new partnerships and linkages with other organizations, government and private sector actors (market, financial, etc.) working on WEP issues at national, regional and community levels.
  • Represent WfWI in partnerships, networks and coalitions and at global and regional forums, ideally as a presenter, facilitator or contributor.
  • Collect high quality case studies, success stories, best practices and lessons learned based on WfWI’s WEP interventions.
  • Write content, technical briefs, blogs, publications, program reports, etc. that can be shared to promote WfWI’s WEP work.
  • Support the global advocacy team in developing key messages and policy papers on WEP issues.

Cross-Organizational Communication & Teamwork
  • Maintain regular communications with Country Offices and the Global Program Unit (GPU)
  • Share up to date knowledge of research, policy and practice with Country Offices and Global teams

Technical Leadership in Women’s Economic Power
  • Serve as the primary technical expert in WEP, providing vision, strategic direction, technical leadership and oversight on WEP initiatives across WfWI globally.
  • Provide strategic advice to Senior Management to guide policy and advocacy agendas, planning, and delivery related to WEP initiatives.
  • Analyze current WEP portfolio and develop global plans to improve WEP programing based on gaps in existing programs.
  • Work with Country Office leadership teams to develop country-specific strategies, plans, innovative approaches, and mechanisms to address gaps (technology, partnerships, etc.).
  • Track trends in the sector, maintain up-to-date knowledge of WEP research and practice, and share recommendations for innovations based on sector analysis with WfWI Senior management.
  • Promote a culture of shared learning and capacity development on WEP across teams, COs and Globally.
  • Develop partnerships with other I/NGOs, networks, UN, governments, market actors, consultants to further WfWI’s WEP programing.

Technical Guidance in Design and Planning
  • Provide high quality technical guidance, remote and in person, to Country Offices and teams for WEP program improvement and enhancing the capacity of team members.
  • Develop and refine global and context-specific WEP tools including standards, SOPs, training curricula and guidelines (e.g. market analysis guidance and tools).
  • Carry out regular monitoring and technical assistance trips to Country Offices to support the effective implementation of their WEP programing, review WEP program plans and reports, together track and report on progress.
  • Collaborate with MERL team to contribute to organizational learning related to WEP, including the development of WfWI’s M&E system related WEP activities, capturing and documenting learning, and building the evidence base for WEP.
  • Review and analyze global and country-specific outcome indicator data, and other evaluations, research and program reports related to WEP, with country teams, as a basis for improving WEP program approaches by context and ensuring high-quality reporting to all external audiences, especially donors.
  • Provide guidance on gender transformative WEP approaches, safe programming principles, and risk analysis.
  • Provide support to country teams in strategic and operational planning.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise



  • Bachelor’s degree in international development, economics, business administration or related field, graduate degree highly desirable.
    • Minimum seven years ’relevant work experience in international development, with emphasis on women’s economic power, of which at least five years must be at managerial level.
    • Lived experience in WfWI’s target countries (or similar) is highly desirable.
    • Deep technical experience in economic and financial programming such as cash programming, financial literacy and inclusion, business skills and entrepreneurship, savings groups (VSLAs) and associations/cooperatives support.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant social and economic development issues such as poverty, power, women’s rights and empowerment, gender, and conflict
    • Analytical ability and extensive experience in creating project plans, implementing plans, managing grants and budgets.
    • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to support a large, complex, ethnically mixed team of people through a participatory and enabling management style.
    • Demonstrated capacity to serve as a coach or mentor of individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and professional backgrounds for staff development and capacity building.
    • Successful at establishing and maintaining internal and external relationships, building trust, and inspiring teamwork.
    • Confidence and experience in external representation and public speaking.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; working knowledge of a language of WfWI’s country teams (French, Kiswahili, Dari, Kurdish, etc.) highly desirable; knowledge of other local languages would be an advantage.
