Things are happening fast in Hillsboro, and we need people to help keep everything moving smoothly.  The Information Services Department is leading dozens of projects and strategic initiatives.  We’re looking for an experienced project manager with an eye for detail, a mind for organization, and a heart for the community to join our team.  Boredom will never be an issue with dozens of projects planned each year including hardware, software, development, upgrades, and entirely new systems.  Plus, we partner in every service Hillsboro provides like public safety, water, parks, libraries, utilities, and community development.  We’re even building a new fiber optic broadband internet service, HiLight, for our great community.  If you’re an expert in getting things done well and want to bring those skills to place where your work can have real meaning, this is the job for you.


What You Will Be Doing

ThInformation Services Project Manager leads a variety of technology related projects in cooperation with every department in the city.  The project manager will be involved from the opening staged of defining and chartering the projects all the way through to celebrating their successful completion.  This will involve managing relationships with city employees. vendors, and other key stakeholders, tracking and reporting on progress and challenges, and managing risks that could derail the project.  


Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Managing all aspects of both complex and simple projects from charter to closeout.

  • Defining project goals and requirements.

  • Creating project schedule and communication plans.
  • Tracking budget, schedule, and quality as project process.
  • Identifying project risks and developing steps to mitigate the risks.
  • Keep stakeholders informed of progress.
  • Escalate any issues to appropriate stakeholder to minimize the negative impact.



Traits of a Successful Candidate

The ideal candidate needs to truly understand the fundamentals for project management. Someone who has proven an ability to charter a project, establishing a solid project plan, and communicate well with stakeholders throughout the project.  We are looking for a candidate who understands how scope, quality, and time interact during a project and how to manage the three together.  

A successful candidate will be self-motivated.  Given a list of projects, the person needs to be trusted to manage them with little oversight.  Again, communication is key, so all stakeholders know the status and progress. The person needs to be well organized to successfully manage multiple progress at once.  Some will be large, some will be small, but all will need to be well managed.



Skills, Knowledge & Abilities 

  • OrganizationGood project management requires good planning and tracking.  This role will be managing multiple projects with multiple stakeholders.  Keeping them, all moving efficiently will require diligent organization. 

  • Communications. This position will need to be able to communicate effectively and share information with people at every level within the organization.  Verbal, written, and interactive technological solutions, e.g. dashboards.

  • FlexibilityThe scope of these programs encompasses projects that scale from the entire organization down to specific divisions within departments.  

  • GovernanceAbility to engage stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding the management and direction of projects and initiatives.

  • Entrepreneur. The ability to develop projects from the beginning.  Navigating ambiguity to achieve the required outcomes.  

  • Relationship BuildingIt is imperative that the Project Manager establish good relationships with all the various stakeholders but also be able to facilitate the relationship building between the stakeholders.

Acceptable Experience and Training

Bachelor’s degree in a closely related field; and four years of related experience in area of assignment, including supervisory responsibility; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.




Licensing/Certifications

• Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) certification desired.
• Background managing technology or information related projects preferred.
