Candidates may be considered for one or both service areas based on their interests, education, and experience: i) Children and Family Services (Early Childhood) and ii) Adult, Teen, and Technology Services.

All Library Assistants will:

Children’s and Family Services (Early Childhood):

  • Contribute to and support the work of the Children and Family Services team.
  • May organize, present, and assist with quality programs for young children (ages 0-5) and families, including storytimes, cultural arts programs, large-scale special events, and the Summer Reading Program.
  • Assist with collection-related tasks, create library displays, participate in library outreach, and conduct library tours.

Adult, Teen, and Technology Services

  • Contribute to and support the work of multiple library divisions.
  • May organize, present, and assist with quality programs for multi-aged audiences including cultural arts programs, large-scale special events, and the Summer Reading Program.
  • Assist with collection-related tasks, create library displays, participate in library outreach, and conduct library tours.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Library Science, six units of college-level technical library courses, one year of library experience or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library work; the use of library indexes, catalogs, and simple reference sources. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the public, especially children.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent standing and sitting. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper; occasional lifting of items weighing up to twenty-five pounds such as files, stacks of paper, references, and other materials. Moving from place to place within the office; some reaching for items above and below desk level. Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal occasionally.



WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Generally clean work environment with limited exposure to conditions such as dust, fumes, odors, and noise. Work schedule may include evenings and weekends.
