Meter Reader ID - 16622

About the position

The Meter Reader position at the City of Myrtle Beach involves traveling on an assigned route to read water meters for residential and commercial properties. The role is essential for accurate utility billing and includes responsibilities such as recording meter readings, maintaining equipment, and responding to customer inquiries.

Responsibilities

  • Drive an assigned service truck on a scheduled route throughout the City.
  • Read residential and commercial water meters and check for correct operation.
  • Record meter readings using a handheld/radio read system and download them to the billing system.
  • Re-read meters with unusual usage levels and verify accurate consumption registration.
  • Clean and maintain residential and commercial meters, reporting defective parts as necessary.
  • Respond to customer questions and service requests regarding meter operations.
  • Investigate and calibrate meters as needed, educating customers on program policies.
  • Assist with turning on and disconnecting water service for accounts as required.
  • Maintain trip logs and other required documentation.
  • Perform routine maintenance on the assigned truck and equipment, including pre- and post-trip inspections.
  • Adhere to established safety procedures and monitor the work environment for safety compliance.
  • Assist other department staff and water line crews as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience in customer service, utility reading, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
  • May be required to obtain and maintain a class 'D' Water Distribution License.
