About the position
The Public Works Crew Leader is responsible for leading a team of Equipment Operators and seasonal staff in the maintenance and repair of city infrastructure, including streets, water, and sewer lines. This role involves both supervisory and hands-on work, ensuring that projects are completed safely and efficiently while adhering to city and state regulations. The Crew Leader assists in organizing work activities, provides training, and ensures compliance with safety practices.
Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise Equipment Operators and seasonal staff in maintenance and repair tasks.
- Assist the Public Works Supervisor with scheduling and organizing work unit activities.
- Complete reports and maintain inventory of supplies and materials.
- Schedule and coordinate activities with other work units.
- Maintain records of work performed and prepare periodic reports.
- Serve as a backup for the supervisor in scheduling work and approving time cards.
- Assign work to crew members and ensure adherence to safety practices.
- Operate various heavy equipment and perform street maintenance tasks.
- Inspect completed work and ensure compliance with guidelines.
- Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment.
- Communicate with the public and respond to inquiries regarding work activities.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
- Four or more years of experience in operating similar equipment, including one year as Equipment Operator III.
- Valid State of North Dakota Waste Water Collection Operator certification.
- State of North Dakota commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
- Knowledge of public works equipment operation, servicing, and maintenance.
- Ability to supervise personnel and provide work direction.
