The Position

 

The current full-time vacancies are for Senior Parks Maintenance Worker in the Parks and Recreation Department. The current vacancies are in the following assignments: Neighborhood Parks, Community and Regional Parks, and Golf Course.


This recruitment is open as an Internal recruitment and Open exam process. Current regular City employees and temporary employees who have accrued a minimum of 600 paid hours worked for the City of Santa Cruz and who have worked for the City within the previous twelve months will be considered as part of the internal recruitment process prior to the open exam process. The eligibility list established from this recruitment may be used to fill other Senior Parks Maintenance Worker vacancies that may occur during the life of the list. The eligibility list established from this recruitment is valid for up to one year from the date established unless the list is extended or abolished by the Human Resources Director.

Under general supervision, the Senior Parks Maintenance Worker performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the development and maintenance of City parks and recreational facilities; and to do related work as required.

Typical Duties

(May include, but are not limited to the following):
 

  • Operates landscape construction and maintenance equipment such as front-end loaders and trucks and may, occasionally, operate a back-hoe.
  • Coordinates and performs pesticides application as necessary.
  • Performs the more complex maintenance and repair of tools and equipment.
  • Designs, installs and renovates complete sprinkler irrigation systems; diagnoses and makes repairs and adjustments on automatic and manual irrigation systems including clocks, valves, sprinkler heads and backflow prevention devices.
  • Propagates plant materials and selects new plants.
  • Coordinates and implements fertilizer programs for park facilities.
  • Diagnoses turf and plant diseases and implements proper remedial treatment.
  • Plans, lays out and installs landscape construction and renovation projects.
  • May perform rough and finished carpentry from blueprints and drawings in the general maintenance, repair or remodeling of facilities and structures.
  • May pour and do finish cement work on a variety of landscape reconstruction and maintenance projects.
  • Orders supplies and materials as required, prepares routine reports and maintains necessary work records
  • Work in and around large crowds of people. 
  • Encourages the public to observe park rules regarding proper and safe use of facilities and reports abuses.
  • May answer inquiries from the public regarding gardening practices or parks rules and regulations.
  • Assists in or coordinates personnel training as required.
  • May act as a working leader of a small crew as assigned; overseeing and coordinating the work.
  • May assist in the evaluation of workers supervised.
  • May prepare inventories of supplies, materials, park facilities and recreational areas.
  • Performs other related duties that may be reasonably expected as part of this classification.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, balancing or walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, climbing, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, reaching overhead and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment, plus the ability to speak and to hear. The ability to lift, carry, push and pull tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 80 pounds is required. The incumbent in this position works outdoors in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The work frequently involves work with hands in water and work on ladders or scaffolding. The incumbent may use chemicals including fertilizers, pesticides, grease and oils or solvents which may expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air or skin contaminants. May be exposed to biohazards and/or hazardous chemicals. The nature of the work requires that the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment and drive motorized vehicles, commonly subjecting the incumbent to vibration. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.


 

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

The minimum qualifications for Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are the following:


Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or tested equivalent; and
  • Two years of experience developing and maintaining public parks and recreational facilities or similar grounds and facilities

For the Golf Course assignment, at least one of the two years of experience must be in golf course maintenance.

Knowledge:

  • Techniques, equipment and materials used in the development, renovation and maintenance of park facilities.
  • Construction safety orders issued by the State Division of Industrial Safety.
  • Proper procedures for safely handling and applying fertilizers and other toxic materials.
  • Western states' horticulture and pruning practices.
  • Techniques, equipment and materials used in the design, installation and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Common turf and plant diseases and their treatment.
  • For the Golf Course assignment, principles of golf course preparation and maintenance.


Skills:

  • Effectively and safely operate construction and maintenance equipment such as front-end loaders and large trucks.
  • Skill to perform rough carpentry and cement work.
  • Perform maintenance and repair of tools and equipment.


Abilities:

  • Organize daily maintenance and projects; effectively lead a small work crew.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, basic sketches, diagrams and construction markers.
  • Safely handle fertilizers and other toxic materials.
  • Follow oral and written instructions given in English.
  • Take accurate measurements and to perform basic arithmetical calculations.
  • Keep records and prepare routine reports in English.
  • Work effectively alone or as a member of a crew.
  • Act in a courteous and diplomatic manner with members of the public.


If assigned to the Wharf or beach parks:

  • Learn the operation of a power boat, barge or personal water craft.
  • Operate beach grooming equipment
  • Work in close proximity with the public under crowded conditions


License and Certificates

  • Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license. 
  • Golf Course positions require possession by end of the probationary period and continued maintenance of a California certified commercial applicator's license, Category B.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Willingness to perform call-back duty as required.
  • Willingness to work irregular shifts, holidays and weekends.
  • Willingness to wear a uniform.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

 

If assigned to the Wharf or beach parks:

  • Some knowledge of the ocean environment (tides, currents, wildlife, weather and swell conditions).
  • Beach driving experience.

 

If assigned to the Golf Course:

  • Some knowledge of the game and rules of golf.
