About the position
The Water/Sewer Maintenance I / II position at the City of Winnemucca involves the maintenance, repair, and monitoring of water and wastewater plant operations and distribution. Under direct supervision, the incumbent will perform routine maintenance duties while learning operational policies and procedures. The role is divided into two classifications: Water/Sewer Maintenance I, which is an entry-level position, and Water/Sewer Maintenance II, which carries more independence and responsibility. The Water/Sewer Maintenance I class focuses on basic maintenance tasks, while the II class involves more complex operations and decision-making responsibilities. In the Water/Sewer Maintenance I role, employees will control and monitor mechanical devices used to treat wastewater, maintain equipment, conduct water sampling, and engage in public contact with customers. They will also assist other Public Works department crews as directed. The Water/Sewer Maintenance II position requires monitoring unit process variables, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, and making adjustments to plant processes based on laboratory and process data. Both positions require a strong understanding of the operational characteristics of pump equipment and the ability to perform preventive and corrective maintenance on facility equipment. The job requires knowledge of methods, materials, and procedures used in the inspection, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer systems, as well as the ability to learn and apply principles of hydraulics and chemical treatment. Special requirements include obtaining a class B Commercial Driver's License within six months of employment. The physical demands of the job include frequent standing, walking, and lifting, as well as the ability to work in confined spaces and under various environmental conditions.
Responsibilities
- Control and monitor mechanical devices used to treat wastewater and related sludges.
- Maintain water and sewer plant equipment and repair as needed.
- Inspect pumps, bar screens, grit chambers, digesters, and heaters daily.
- Conduct water sampling for diagnostic testing purposes.
- Calculate chemical dosage for water treatment.
- Investigate components of water and sewer operations such as plumbing and electrical.
- Install, repair, and read water meters; clean and lubricate pumps.
- Engage in public contact with customers and related field personnel.
- Operate and program telemetry systems.
- Assist other Public Works department crews as directed.

Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of experience operating piping, valves, and controls in a process or manufacturing environment.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, and procedures used in inspection, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer systems.
- Ability to monitor and control wastewater treatment plant functions through SCADA and computer control systems.
- Basic mathematical calculations and principles of hydraulics.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience involving the installation, maintenance, and repair of fluid pumps and related systems with a minimum capacity of 200 gallons per minute.
